Currently we have two different destination versions of the FTM-500DR/DE: USA and EXP (including EU). Please open the Update Instruction Manual and review the information before starting the update firmware.
*The firmware versions for Japan and CHN are different from USA or EXP versions. Please check the latest firmware of the Japanese version on the Japan WEB site: http://www.yaesu.com/jp/amateur_index/product/ftm-500d/download.html
*The CHN version on the China WEB site: http://www.yaesu.com.cn/page/html/yaesucompany.php http://www.yaesu.com.cn/down/class/?2.html
You must check the destination version of the radio you have and use the correct update firmware. The destination is marked on the box serial number label. If the box is not available, the country you purchased the radio in may indicate the destination. If the FCC part 15 rules statement is on the radio above the Serial/ID label, it is the USA version. Other versions will not have the FCC label. Download the FTM-500DR/DE data and [FTM-500D_USA_Firmware_Update_202503.zip] or [FTM-500D_EXP_Firmware_Update_202503.zip] from the website listed below:

1. The PMG function has been updated to make it even easier to use:
PMG (Primary Memory Group): Up to 5 VFO or Memory Channel frequencies can be assigned to the PMG (Primary Memory Group) and monitored. The reception status of the PMG channels is displayed with an orange/gray-colored bar graph in the PMG screen. When a signal disappears, the bar graph color changes from orange to gray in real time. With the updated FW version, the gray bar graphs (historically received signals) automatically fade out in 2 seconds after a signal is lost. With the current FW version, the gray bar graphs remain until they are manually reset by pressing the DIAL knob.
Other practical differences of the PMG function between the updated and the current FW version are:
(Updated PMG)
AUTO Mode
The PMG channels are scanned and up to two channels with signals are simultaneously received and heard. Transmission is automatically performed on the received channel.
MANUAL Mode
The PMG channel manually selected to transmit is always scanned and received. Other PMG channels are also scanned and a channel with a signal can be received and heard at the same time. The transmit channel is selectable by rotating the DIAL knob or touching the bar graph of the desired channel on the PMG screen.
(Current PMG)
AUTO Mode
The PMG channel manually selected to transmit is always scanned and received. Other PMG channels are also scanned and a channel with a signal can be received and heard at the same time. The transmit channel is selectable by rotating the DIAL knob on the PMG screen.
MANUAL Mode
The PMG channel manually selected to transmit is always scanned and received. Other PMG channels are also scanned and shown in a bar graph on the display, but audio is not output. The transmit channel is selectable by rotating the DIAL knob on the PMG screen.
2. The AMG function has been updated to make it even easier to use:
MAG (Memory Auto Grouping): In addition to Memory channels which can be recalled by each band, the updated FW version has the new “My Group” feature which permits selection of any memory channel regardless of band.
3. Improved APRS operability:
– Shortcut keys for frequently used functions have been added to the screen, allowing one-touch operation. (STATION LIST, MESSAGE LIST, BEACON, TX SELECT, BEACON TX)
– You can now switch between H-UP and N-UP by touching the compass section on the compass screen.
If you already have the above listed firmware versions, it is not necessary to update the FTM- 500DR/DE again.
We hope this new firmware will increase your enjoyment of the FTM-500DR/DE. Thank you for choosing Yaesu radios. If you have any problems or questions, please contact Yaesu Amateur Tech Support amateurtech@yaesu.com.
